Mirrorless Cameras

Mirrorless cameras are a great option if you’re wanting fantastic image quality without the size and weight of a DSLR camera. With the versatility of interchangeable lenses, and high specs that rival those in some DSLRs, mirrorless cameras are gaining ever more popularity amongst pros and novices alike. Their smaller size affords greater agility and discretion, making them suited to a wide variety of photography genres ranging from travel to weddings and portraiture, as well as videography.

Which Mirrorless Camera?

CameraPro stocks the latest mirrorless cameras from leading brands including Sony, Panasonic, Fujifilm, Olympus and Canon. If you’re deciding which mirrorless camera to buy, it’s important to consider the camera’s sensor size as well as the compatible lenses available.

The Difference Between SLR/DSLR and Mirrorless Cameras

Like an SLR (single-lens reflex) or digital SLR camera, a mirrorless camera has a lens mount that will accommodate different (interchangeable) lenses. However, it lacks the mirror system present within an SLR/DSLR.

DSLR cameras use mechanics (incorporating a mirror) and an optical viewfinder to provide an exact view of what the camera’s lens sees. Mirrorless cameras, meanwhile, use electronics and an electronic viewfinder to do this. This removes the need for certain components and allows for a more compact, lightweight and portable camera (compared to DSLRs) that some find easier to handle.

Advantages of Mirrorless Cameras

A growing number of photographers and videographers, including professionals, are embracing mirrorless cameras, which vary in sensor size from micro four-thirds to APS-C (cropped) and full frame (35mm equivalent). Some of the benefits of mirrorless cameras include:

  • In most cases mirrorless digital cameras are lighter, smaller and more discreet body than a DSLR
  • MIrrorless digital cameras have a bigger sensor (meaning a higher image quality) than a compact camera
  • Interchangeable lenses
  • Some mirrorless digital camera models are compatible with DSLR lenses (adapter may be necessary)
  • Greater number and spread of autofocus points, which allows for greater focusing accuracy at the edges of an image

For anyone looking to buy mirrorless digital cameras, it’s worth also understanding the disadvantages (compared to DSLRs), which usually include less robust construction and shorter battery life. Check out our Beginner’s Guide to Digital Cameras for more.
