The Ricoh GR IIIx HDF is a specialised version of the popular GR IIIx compact camera, designed to provide a unique visual quality with its built-in Highlight Diffusion Filter. This feature introduces a soft, blurred effect in highlight areas, creating a dreamlike and nostalgic image style. The filter replaces the ND filter of the standard GR IIIx, while the rest of the camera remains the same, including the 24.2MP APS-C sensor, hybrid autofocus system, Shake Reduction and compact design that makes the GR series ideal for everyday carry and street photography.

Highlight Diffusion Filter

The Highlight Diffusion Filter can be activated or deactivated instantly using the dedicated Fn button on the rear of the camera. It adds a soft, ethereal look to highlights and enhances the camera’s ability to create images with atmosphere and mood. This edition also features a distinct silver-coloured shutter release button, setting it apart visually from the standard GR III models.

40mm-Equivalent GR Lens

Equipped with a newly designed 26.1mm f/2.8 prime lens, equivalent to 40mm on a full-frame system, the GR IIIx HDF provides a wide-normal field of view that is slightly narrower than the 28mm lens found on previous GR cameras. This focal length delivers a subtle level of visual compression, allowing for more selective compositions while retaining flexibility. The optical design incorporates advanced glass elements to achieve sharpness and colour accuracy, while a dedicated macro mode allows close-up work within a range of 4.7 to 9.4 inches. For added versatility, built-in crop modes replicate the perspective of 50mm and 71mm lenses without the need to change equipment.

High-Resolution Sensor and Processing

The 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, working in tandem with the GR Engine 6 processor, produces high-resolution 14-bit DNG and JPEG files with excellent tonality and natural colour rendering. The wide ISO range of 100 to 102,400 ensures reliable performance in varying lighting conditions, while a 3-axis, 4-stop Shake Reduction system enables sharper handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds. The sensor employs an anti-aliasing filter-less design to maximise resolution, with the option of simulating an AA filter effect through the Shake Reduction system when required to counter moiré.
