Ricoh GR IV Monochrome Digital Camera
GR IV Monochrome
The Ricoh GR IV Monochrome builds on the RICOH GR IV, continuing the GR series’ core philosophy of high image quality, fast performance, and true portability. It introduces a monochrome-only image sensor, designed specifically for black-and-white photography. By removing the colour filter and the colour interpolation process, the camera captures light more directly, allowing the high-performance GR lens to deliver cleaner detail, smoother tonal transitions, and more refined rendering.

The First GR Dedicated to Black-and-White
The “ultimate snap shooter” designed exclusively for monochrome photography, the Ricoh GR IV Monochrome is a specialised version of the popular compact fixed-lens camera. It features a uniquely modified sensor that records only black-and-white imagery, delivering enhanced clarity and tonal depth.
Beyond the black-and-white–only 25.7MP sensor, this Monochrome model includes a built-in selectable red contrast filter, replacing the ND filter found on the standard GR IV. The camera also introduces monochrome-specific Image Control options and an updated exterior design with a refined monochrome aesthetic.
Aside from these targeted updates, the GR IV Monochrome remains virtually identical to the standard GR IV, including the 28mm-equivalent lens, fast autofocus, refined Shake Reduction, and improved wireless control via the GR WORLD app.
Monochrome-Specific Imaging Technology
The 25.7MP APS-C CMOS sensor lacks both an anti-aliasing filter and a colour filter array (CFA), allowing it to record imagery using pure luminance values. This results in improved sharpness, higher resolution, and a broader native sensitivity range of ISO 160–409600.
With no colour interpolation at the sensor level, black-and-white images exhibit rich tonal gradation and more natural-looking grain, closely resembling traditional film characteristics.
Built-In Red Contrast Filter
Instead of a solid ND filter, the GR IV Monochrome incorporates a built-in red contrast filter within the lens unit, selectable via the rear On/Off button.
This filter allows only red wavelengths to reach the sensor, producing:
-
Dramatic outdoor scenes with darkened skies and bright clouds
-
Brightened skin tones and enhanced rendering of reddish subjects
Monochrome Image Control Modes
Two new Image Control options have been added to optimise monochrome output:
-
Solid: Uses a hard tonal curve for a clean, bold, high-contrast look
-
Grainy: Introduces a pronounced grain effect reminiscent of traditional darkroom prints while preserving highlight and shadow detail
