Overview
The Sony FX2 is a compact, AI-powered hybrid camera that combines professional-grade video capabilities with advanced still image performance. Designed for filmmakers and content creators on the move, the FX2 delivers the functionality of Sony's Cinema Line in a lightweight, travel-friendly body.
Sensor and Processing Power
At the heart of the FX2 is a 33MP full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor, paired with the advanced BIONZ XR processor. This powerful combination allows for 7K oversampling in full-frame mode, producing highly detailed and sharp DCI 4K video. The sensor also supports Super 35 mode, offering flexibility in lens choices while maintaining impressive resolution and image quality.
Video Capabilities
The FX2 records 10-bit 4:2:2 internal 4K video and can output 16-bit RAW via HDMI for high-end post-production workflows. It supports various professional codecs including XAVC S, S-I, and HS (H.264/H.265), and offers S-Log3 and S-Cinetone for refined colour grading and cinematic tonality. With the ability to import up to 16 custom LUTs and support for variable frame rates, the FX2 caters to a broad range of creative styles—from time-lapse to slow motion. In-camera de-squeeze for 1.3x and 2.0x anamorphic lenses further enhances its cinematic appeal.
AI Autofocus and Subject Recognition
A standout feature of the FX2 is its dedicated AI processing unit, which powers advanced real-time subject recognition. Using deep learning, it identifies and tracks people, animals, and vehicles with increased accuracy. Eye autofocus for humans and animals is improved by 30% over the FX3 and FX30, making it ideal for unpredictable, fast-paced shooting environments like wildlife or sports. The AI also enables auto-framing, dynamically adjusting the composition to keep the subject centred in the frame.
Stabilisation Technology
For handheld shooting, the FX2 offers 5-axis in-body image stabilisation, further enhanced by the AI processor through Dynamic Active Mode. This technology intelligently reduces camera shake during movement. Additionally, stabilisation metadata is embedded in the footage for further refinement in post-production using compatible software.
Design and Usability
Despite its powerful internals, the FX2 maintains a compact, lightweight design, ideal for travel and on-location shoots. It features a high-resolution 3.68-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, which tilts from 0 to 90° for flexible framing angles. With a layout and interface familiar to users of Sony's Cinema Line cameras, it’s built for both intuitive operation and professional workflow integration.
