High quality sensor for professional shooting

The Nikon D500 is equipped with a 20.9 megapixel DX-format sensor, providing a high level of detail and vibrant colours. This format adds on 1.5x the reach to your lens, giving you the versatility to capture extraordinary scenes. The stunning resolution gives you rein to take incredible shots on your travels, from mesmerising sunsets to larger-than-life mountain ranges and rushing waterfalls.

Fast image processor

Decisively capture the perfect split-second moment with the capacity to shoot 10 frames per second. Nikon’s EXPEED 5 processor enables high-speed shooting to ensure you won’t miss a moment of the action. Burst shooting of up to 200 shots in 14-bit RAW gives you the ability to take multiple images in a row, so you’re guaranteed to find at least one – or a few – great shots.

Accurate autofocus

Delivering faster, more accurate focus acquisition, the D500 is equipped with a powerful advanced 153-point autofocus system to accurately capture moments with complete accuracy. You’ll be able to track moving subjects without blur, whether it’s a bird in flight, gushing waterfalls, or a bike race – whatever your subject, you’ll snap it up in precise detail and clarity. Covering a wide area of the image, you’ll also be able to focus in on small details.

Shoot in any light

Shooting at 15 points compatibility down to an effective aperture of f/8, you’ll be able to capture high detail even in unforgiving lighting conditions. With native ISO of 100 to 15200, expandable to ISO 50-1640000, you can take on the most challenging situations. Low light, dusk, dawn, candlelight or full sun – any lighting condition will be possible with the D500.

Smooth video recording

Record high-quality high-definition video with 4K UHD video output. There’s plenty of room to crop or stabilise HD video if you want to make adjustments to your shots. You can record internally for run-and-gun video recording or uncompressed HDMI output for the highest quality.

Clear tilting LCD touchscreen

The Nikon D500’s 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen LCD with 2,359k-dot resolution gives clear, vivid playback and live view shooting. With the benefit of touchscreen, you can quickly navigate the menus and make changes in your settings at the touch of your fingertips. The tilting LCD screen makes it easier to view your shots when shooting from high or low angles.

What sort of photography is this camera best suited to?

The Nikon D500 is a great camera for action and sports photography, with its powerful image processor and fast autofocus. It also performs very well in low light situations, and because of its tough and rugged design, is also a great choice for photographers who find themselves shooting in the outdoors.

Can I use DX and FX lenses with this camera?

This camera is optimised for use with Nikon DX lenses but you can also use FX lenses. Keep in mind however that if you're using an FX lens it will be subject to a 1.5x crop factor due to the DX sensor in the camera.

Which autofocus mode is best to shoot in?

Try experimenting with the different autofocus modes to find the one that works best with your subject matter. Single point autofocus works well with for still subjects, 3D tracking is good for erratic movements, or try the Dynamic Point for slightly moving subjects.

How can I better maintain focus tracking?

Are you back button focusing? By separating your focus and shooting buttons you’re able to maintain focus tracking between shots easier.

Do I need a spare battery?

Yes, it’s always a wise idea to have at least a spare EN-EL15 battery. Halfway through a football match or 5 miles into the wilderness is a terrible time to find your battery flat. A couple of extra batteries will give you peace of mind to never be caught out at the wrong moment.

Which memory cards do you recommend?

Go for fast memory cards that can take on a lot of data. The D500 is designed for speed but if you’re using slow cards, your buffer is going to fill fast and you’ll be sitting idle waiting for your cards to finish just as the goal of the year happens right before you.

What type of lenses do you recommend?

The Nikon D500 camera works perfectly with a large range of lenses, so it'll depend on what kind of shots you want to capture as to which is the best lens for you.  If you're interested in wildlife and sports photography, a great lens is the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens. Other great lens picks include the Nikon 70-200mm or the Sigma 120-300mm, which both offer a decent zoom range with a wide aperture of f/2.8.
