The Nikon D500 is a great camera for action and sports photography, with its powerful image processor and fast autofocus. It also performs very well in low light situations, and because of its tough and rugged design, is also a great choice for photographers who find themselves shooting in the outdoors.
This camera is optimised for use with Nikon DX lenses but you can also use FX lenses. Keep in mind however that if you're using an FX lens it will be subject to a 1.5x crop factor due to the DX sensor in the camera.
Try experimenting with the different autofocus modes to find the one that works best with your subject matter. Single point autofocus works well with for still subjects, 3D tracking is good for erratic movements, or try the Dynamic Point for slightly moving subjects.
Are you back button focusing? By separating your focus and shooting buttons you’re able to maintain focus tracking between shots easier.
Yes, it’s always a wise idea to have at least a spare EN-EL15 battery. Halfway through a football match or 5 miles into the wilderness is a terrible time to find your battery flat. A couple of extra batteries will give you peace of mind to never be caught out at the wrong moment.
Go for fast memory cards that can take on a lot of data. The D500 is designed for speed but if you’re using slow cards, your buffer is going to fill fast and you’ll be sitting idle waiting for your cards to finish just as the goal of the year happens right before you.
The Nikon D500 camera works perfectly with a large range of lenses, so it'll depend on what kind of shots you want to capture as to which is the best lens for you. If you're interested in wildlife and sports photography, a great lens is the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens. Other great lens picks include the Nikon 70-200mm or the Sigma 120-300mm, which both offer a decent zoom range with a wide aperture of f/2.8.
