Proving that Fujifilm’s ambition and innovation know no limits, the company has just announced the newest additions to its medium format GFX Series: the GFX 50R, three more GF lenses, and an eye-opening 100MP flagship concept model.

A New Era for Medium Format

Once the preserve of professional fine art and studio photographers, medium format—with its exceptional image quality—is gaining increasingly broader popularity, wooing discerning enthusiasts with portable, accessible camera bodies made possible by digital mirrorless technology.

Fujifilm has played no small part in that trend. 2017’s launch of the Fujifilm GFX 50S—first of the GFX Series cameras—and the astoundingly high res GF lenses secured the manufacturer’s place as a leader in the medium format market. The GFX 50S was, and still is, a triumph of extraordinary image quality; rugged, intuitive and operable design; and Fujifilm’s beautifully honed colour reproduction expertise.

Superlative Performance in Rangefinder Form

With the same 51.4 MP sensor (measuring 1.7 times the size of a full frame sensor) and X-Processor Pro processing engine, the new GFX 50R promises to deliver equally superlative clarity, sharpness, and low light and AF performance. Featuring aluminium exposure dials, dual SD card slots, a 3.2” 2.3 million-dot LCD touch screen and high res EVF with 100% coverage, the camera’s durable magnesium alloy body is extensively sealed against dust and weather, and able to operate in -10°C conditions.

However, unlike its more SLR-styled predecessor, the GFX 50R follows a lighter, slimmer rangefinder design enabling photographers to keep one eye at the viewfinder and the other on their surroundings. It also frees them up to shoot snapshots, portraits, weddings and documentary photography. The camera is Bluetooth enabled for fast, simple file transfer to a smartphone or tablet (via the Fujifilm Camera Remote app) and compatible with multiple tethered shooting software programs—perfect for streamlining workflow in the studio.
