The Ultimate ‘Nifty Fifty’

Fast, sharp, versatile and compact, the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens is the ideal ‘nifty fifty’ to complete any photographer’s kit. Its fixed 50mm focal length (80mm on APS-C cameras) is perfect for portraits, landscape images, street photography and general snapshots. It’s as useful in a professional studio as it is for travel or day-to-day adventures. Weighing just 290g, the Canon 50mm 1.4 fits easily into any bag and can be used effortlessly for hours at a time.

Beautiful Background Blur & Low-Light Performance

Make subjects pop against soft, blurred backgrounds. Boasting a wide, round f1.4 maximum aperture, the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens can give your images beautifully expressive depth of field. This wide aperture also expands your shooting possibilities, delivering sharper, clearer results and more accurate focusing even in low light. For indoor, night-time and other scenarios when you need to make the most of available light (such as concerts), the Canon 50mm 1.4 is a perfect complement for zoom lenses in your kit.

Stunningly Sharp & Clear

Using the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens you’ll capture brilliant sharpness and clarity, even at wide open aperture settings. Super Spectra coatings on the lens surface help deliver stunning, true-to-life colours, with higher contrast and reduced ghosting and flare – ideal when shooting towards the light, like in sunset photos or backlit portraits.

Super-fast Focusing

Thanks to an extra-small ultrasonic motor (USM), the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens delivers super high-speed autofocus during stills shooting – ideal for photographing fast-moving subjects like children, pets, athletes or performers. Not only that, it’s the only lens in the Canon EF system that includes a Micro USM and still offers full-time manual focusing while the lens is in AF mode. This has great benefits for when you need to really fine-tune your focus, like when shooting through trees or capturing fine details like eyelashes.

Will the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens work on my camera?

The Canon 50mm f1.4 USM lens is compatible with all EF-mount Canon cameras, both full frame (e.g. Canon 6D) and APS-C/cropped sensor (e.g. Canon 90D, Canon 800D, Canon 1500D).

The EF-RF mount adapter will let you mount the lens on Canon EOS R series mirrorless cameras, while the EF-M mount adapter will let you mount the lens on Canon EOS M series mirrorless cameras.

With the Sigma MC-11 mount converter or an EF to E-mount Metabones adapter, the lens can also work on Sony E-mount cameras.

Please note that the Canon 50mm f1.4 lens’ effective focal length when used on an APS-C/cropped sensor cameras would equate to 80mm.

What size filter does the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens take?

The Canon 50mm f1.4 USM lens is compatible with 58mm circular filters.

Does the Canon 50mm 1.4 come with a lens hood?

The Canon 50mm f1.4 does not come with a lens hood. The compatible Canon ES-71 II lens hood is available for separate purchase.

Is the Canon 50mm 1.4 lens suitable for group portraits as well as individual or couple portraits?

The Canon 50mm f1.4 USM lens would work for family and small-group portraits. Just be mindful that with more people in the photo, you will likely need a narrower aperture (no wider than f4) to ensure everyone is in focus. You’ll also need to move further backwards to get everyone in the frame.

For larger groups or smaller spaces where you don’t have the option to move further away, you may find a wider lens (24-35mm full frame equivalent) more suitable.
