Converter

At CameraPro we stock three types of converters – lens converters, teleconverters and lens mount adapters.

Lens converters are a relatively cheap and easy way to widen the focal length range of your fixed lens camera or camcorder. They simply screw on to the front of your lens to change your lens’s focal length and viewing angle.

Teleconverters are professional units that attach to a DSLR lens to multiply the lens’ focal length. Canon and Nikon make teleconverters but it should be noted that they don’t work with all Canon and Nikon lenses, so please check with CameraPro before you buy.

Lens mount adapters convert the fitting on your camera body to accept different lens mounts. So, for example, the Fujifilm M-Mount adapter allows for M-Mount lenses to be used on X-Mount cameras like the Fujifilm X-Pro 1. Please note: By using an adapter you may lose some lens functionality like autofocus. Please check with CameraPro before you buy.

Wide Angle Lens Converters
The main reason for getting a lens converter for a fixed lens camera is to widen the viewing angle. How wide depends on the magnification factor of the lens converter. Most wide angle lens converters on the market are in the 0.6x to 0.8x range. The Fujifilm WCL-X100 wide angle converter lens for example offers a 0.8x magnification factor that converts the 35mm lens on a Fuji X100 to a 28mm f/2.8. For camcorders the Canon WD-H58W wide angle converter also has a 0.8x magnification factor. Used on a Canon XA10 camcorder it changes the focal length of the standard 30.4mm lens to a much wider 24mm.

Teleconverters
Canon’s range of teleconverters are known as Extenders. Two Extenders are available – the EF Extender 1.4x III and the EF Extender 2.0x III. Nikon make three teleconverters for Nikon DSLRs. These are the TC-14E II with 1.4x magnification, the TC-17E II for 1.7x magnification, and the TC-20E III which delivers 2.0x magnification.

To give an example of how they work, a 200mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter would give the lens an effective focal length of 280mm. A 2.0x teleconverter turns a 200mm lens into a 400mm lens.
